Where to put soap in my dishwasher?

One compartment says main wash, and the other says pre wash. It should be noted that only the main wash compartment can close. My friend said put soap in both, but if that's true it would just faa out of the pre wash compartment. I use the little blocks of soap. Thanks a lot!
