The best way to determine how long it will take you to knit a 4 foot long scarf is to determine how many rows to the inch and then multiply that times 48 inches. You may find after you knit a few rows that 51 stitches may make the scarf too wide. If you start over and cast on 30-36 stitches you should have more than enough yarn to knit a 4' or longer scarf and it won't take you quite as long to knit one row.
