Can a Haitian and a French understand eachother?

I wonder if someone speaking in Haitian Creole can understand and carry a conversation with somebody speaking French? I'm Dominican, so I've heard quite a bit of Haitians speaking, and it doesnt sound like french to me, but then again i dont know french =)
